The 122nd session of the UN Tourism Executive Council was held on November 13-15 in Cartagena, Colombia, under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia. The event brought together representatives from over 31 member states of the organization.
Azerbaijan was represented by Jalil Malikov, Deputy Head of Staff and Head of the International Relations Department at the State Tourism Agency.
During the session, detailed information was provided about COP29, which Azerbaijan is currently hosting, along with the integration of tourism into the COP agenda for the first time through collaboration between COP Presidency, the State Tourism Agency, and the UN Tourism.
Member states were invited to support the Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism, set to be adopted at the First High-Level Meeting of Tourism Ministers during COP29 Tourism Day.
Additionally, Executive Council member states were invited to attend the 71st session of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for Europe, which Azerbaijan will host in the first half of 2025. Azerbaijan also announced its candidacy for one of the European regional seats on the UN Tourism Executive Council for the 2025-2029 term, emphasizing the importance of securing member states' votes in the upcoming elections.
Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, congratulated Azerbaijan on the high-level organization of COP29, stating that the event plays a significant role in enhancing the reputation of both the Caucasus region and the broader international community.
At the conclusion of the session, Brazil was elected as the Chair of the UN Tourism Executive Council for 2025.
